Why packing slips matter

A packing slip is the only document inside the box. It confirms what was shipped, helps the customer verify the order, and gives them a clear path to contact you if something is wrong. It reduces support emails and improves reviews.

Unlike an invoice, a packing slip never shows prices. This matters for gifts and for customers who forward packages to others.

What goes on a packing slip

• Order number — the unique identifier the customer sees
• Order date and ship date — clarifies when it left
• Your business name — not full address unless legally required
• Customer name and shipping address — matches the box label
• Line items — quantity and description. No prices.
• Contact / returns info — how to reach you if something's wrong
• Thank-you note — small, warm, optional

Packing slip vs invoice

• Packing slip — inside the box. No prices. Confirms contents.
• Invoice — sent separately (email or mail). Shows prices and amount owed.

Do not send an invoice inside the box. It shows how much the customer paid, which is a problem for gifts, and it duplicates billing they already received at checkout.

Paper vs digital

For high-volume sellers, printing one slip per order becomes expensive. Two alternatives:

• Digital packing slip — send by email after shipment. Cheaper, less paper waste. Some customers prefer this.
• Self-adhesive label printer — print the slip and shipping label on the same 4×6 label. Saves paper and tape.

Common mistakes

• Including prices (breaks gifts, causes complaints)
• Wrong order number on the wrong box (rare but catastrophic)
• No contact info — customer can't reach you
• No return instructions — creates support tickets
• Missing items that were actually shipped
