What separates a converting page from a pretty one

Most landing pages fail for one of five reasons: unclear headline, no single action, weak proof, poor load time, or a mobile experience that breaks the layout. Fix those five and everything else follows.

This checker walks through 20 specific criteria. Each is binary — the page either does it or doesn't. Tick honestly. The score is more useful when it hurts.

The 20 criteria and why they matter

  1. Clear headline — states the offer in one sentence
  2. Sub-headline — expands the promise in one to two lines
  3. Above-fold value prop — visible without scrolling
  4. Single primary CTA — one action, repeated, not five different actions
  5. Benefit-led copy — leads with outcomes, not features
  6. Customer proof — testimonial, review, or case study
  7. Trust badges — secure checkout, refund, guarantee, logos
  8. Value imagery — product shots, screenshots, real photos
  9. Fast load time — under 2s on mobile
  10. Mobile responsive — readable on a phone
  11. Clear pricing — if there's a price, show it
  12. FAQ section — resolves top objections
  13. Contact / support — reachable if something goes wrong
  14. Post-conversion thank-you — confirms what happens next
  15. Privacy policy link — required for many ad platforms
  16. Terms or refund policy — trust signal and legal
  17. No auto-play media — surprises users, hurts conversion
  18. No stock photos of people — real > stock, always
  19. Consistent design system — same colors, same fonts throughout
  20. Loads without 404s — check images, fonts, scripts

Worked example

A page with 12/20 ticks scores 60% — moderate. The most common misses: no FAQ, no trust badges, auto-play video, no thank-you page. Fixing just those four can lift conversion 20–40% in many tests.

What a high score does not guarantee

  • Whether the offer is desirable
  • Whether the traffic matches the offer
  • Whether the price is right
  • Whether the brand is trusted

A 20/20 page for the wrong audience converts worse than a 12/20 page for the right audience. Audience first, page second.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a landing page convert?

Clear headline, single primary action, benefit-led copy, social proof, fast load, and mobile-friendly layout. Every element either supports or distracts from the action.

How long should a landing page be?

As long as needed to make the case. High-price or complex offers need more. Simple lead capture needs less. Long is fine if every section earns its place.

How many CTAs should a landing page have?

One primary action. The same CTA can appear multiple times on the page (top, middle, bottom). Multiple different CTAs split attention and reduce conversion.

What is the ideal landing page load time?

Under 2 seconds on mobile. Over 3 seconds loses roughly 40% of visitors. Over 5 seconds loses the majority.
